New Aetna Radiology Preauthorization Requirements
Important changes in Aetna's preauthorization requirements for high-tech outpatient diagnostic imaging procedures will be effective February 15, 2011.
As of that date, Aetna will require preauthorization through MedSolutions® for:
- MRI/MRA
- Pet scan
- Stress echocardiography
- Nuclear cardiology
- CT scan, including CTA
- Diagnostic right and left heart catheterization
Requirements for preauthorization of inpatient and emergency room radiology and for outpatient radiology services that are not listed above remain the same.
Physicians who order these services are responsible for obtaining preauthorization. Rendering providers should verify that ordering physicians have obtained the necessary preauthorizations prior to scheduling patients for services. Failure to do so may result in non-payment of claims.
To obtain preauthorization, contact MedSolutions at (888) 693-3211 or by FAX at (888) 693-3210. Requests also may be made via the MedSolutions website.
To help providers prepare for these changes, Aetna has published Radiology Preauthorization Program for High-Tech Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Procedures. If you have questions after reviewing this document, please call Aetna at (888) 632-3862.
