Nebraska Law Impacts Lab Billing
Effective Jan. 1, 2010, Nebraska law (LB 394) requires changes in laboratory billing practices. The law requires providers who order, but do not supervise or perform a component of anatomic pathology services, to disclose to the patient the identity of the physician or laboratory providing the pathology service. The billing statement must also indicate the amount to be paid for each service.
The law is sponsored by Senator Tony Fulton.
Providers with questions about LB 394 are advised to consult legal counsel. Additional information is also available from the Nebraska Medical Association and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
