As of January 1, 2012, CMS will require certain providers of advanced diagnostic imaging procedures to be accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) or The Joint Commission (TJC).
All except a very few Midlands Choice radiology providers already meet this requirement or are exempt. We have, however, advised the remaining 13-15 radiology providers that it will be necessary to obtain certification to remain in the network.
The requirement applies to the technical component of advanced diagnostic imaging procedures performed by:
- Independent diagnostic testing facilities
- Freestanding imaging centers
- Office-based imaging facilities
- Physicians
- Non-physician practitioners
- Suppliers of advanced diagnostic imaging procedures
Four categories of procedures, X-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and mammography, are excluded from the requirement.
