Aetna Review of Hospital Acquired Conditions

Recent News

Effective August 1, 2010, Aetna began reviewing inpatient claims to identify charges incurred due to a Hospital Acquired Condition.

Per diem or room and board charges that extend beyond a patient's expected length of stay that are directly related to the treatment of the acquired condition will not be paid.  Patients have no financial responsibility for these charges.

Hospital Acquired Conditions include:

  • Unintended retention of a foreign object in a patient after surgery or other procedure.
  • Hemolytic reaction due to the administration of ABO/HLA-incompatible blood or blood products.
  • Failure to identify and treat hyperbilirubinemia in neonates.
  • A burn incurred from any source while being cared for in a health care facility.
  • Intravascular air embolism that occurs while being cared for in a health care facility.
  • A medication error.
  • A fall while being cared for in a health care facility.
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism following certain orthopedic procedures: total knee replacement and hip replacement.
