Aetna Publishes CT Scan, MRI and Ultrasound Payment Policy

Recent News

Aetna has published the following advisories regarding its CT scan, MRI and ultrasound payment policies:

Facilities -- revised policy and new effective date
A proposed policy about multiple procedure reduction for CT scans, MRIs or ultrasounds will not be applied on November 15, 2010, as previously announced.

Practitioners and facilities - new claims payment policy
With dates of service on or after February 1, 2011, Aetna will allow multiple CT scans, MRIs or ultrasounds on the same day at 50 percent for the subsequent scan(s).  This is based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) multiple procedure reduction policy for certain diagnostic imaging procedures.

The reduction will apply to:

  • scans performed on contiguous body areas
  • technical and global charges
  • facility and medical claims, including independent radiology centers

The reduction will not apply to:

  • professional fees billed separately
  • claim lines billed with Modifier 59

If you have questions about these policies, refer to Aetna's website via Navinet or call Aetna at (888) 632-3862.
