Aetna's Coverage for Private Rooms

Recent News

Aetna provides coverage for private hospital rooms only when medically necessary for the patient.  If a hospital bills for a private room when the facility does not have a semi-private room or one is not available, reimbursement is limited to the hospital’s most common semi-private room rate.  If the hospital has no semi-private rate, Aetna will determine the most common semi-private room rate.

If an Aetna member chooses a private room, he or she is responsible for the cost difference between the private room and most common semi-private room.  When submitting claims for inpatient rooms, hospitals should use proper condition, value and revenue codes.
