Precertification Requests
Submitting precertification requests to Aetna online, and tracking their status, is simple and efficient. Features include:
- Availability for all Aetna plans 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday, and Sundays after 11 a.m. CST
- Wait time of one minute or less
- Secure data transmission
Determining Precertification Requirements
By entering up to five CPT or HCPCS codes in Aetna's Code Search Tool, providers can learn immediately whether precertification is required for specific procedures. Users may also print a record of each transaction, even if precertification is not required. This tool is available on both Aetna's public and secure websites. Aetna has also published its 2010 precertification list on its public website.
Clinical Policy Bulletins
Providers are encouraged to regularly review Aetna's Clinical Policy Bulletins (CPBs), including additions, revisions, updates and deletions, on Aetna's public website. The CPBs state Aetna's policies on the experimental and investigational status and medical necessity of medical technologies and services. In combination with members' healthcare plans and other criteria, CPBs guide Aetna's medical coverage decisions.
