To comply with federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) legislation, Aetna is enhancing their Aetna Voice Advantage® interactive telephone self-service system to accept and require healthcare providers' National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers. Aetna is requesting that all healthcare providers register their NPI with them to avoid future customer service delays and to be compliant.
Registered users of Aetna’s secure provider website may share their NPI by logging in and selecting "Update Profiles" then "Add/Update National Provider Identifier (NPI)." Healthcare providers may also use the NPI submission form that allows for submission of up to five NPIs, or request a file transfer spreadsheet for larger, more complex physician groups, hospitals, IPAs and other providers who are sharing multiple NPIs.
