Do you remember learning that our industry would be required to include National Provider Identifiers on claim transactions and, furthermore, replace standard claim formats with updated versions? Believe it or not, these were implemented in 2007.
Our industry - not dissimilar to many others - endures frequent change. During the transition, it may be difficult to see past the daily struggles these new ways of doing business impose; however, it is perhaps easier to plan and adapt to the future when we can view change as a sign of progress.
Now, our industry is anticipating changes for 2012 and 2013, by which time we must be prepared for HIPAA version 5010 claim transactions and the implementation of a much larger set of diagnosis codes, ICD-10.
These will have major implications for virtually every aspect of our business. So while 2012 and 2013 may sound far in the future, no time is too soon to be prepared for progress.
In coming months, we will be communicating with you more about our plans and how these changes will affect our business among and between you and our payers. And we want your input on how we can best play this vital facilitator role - a responsibility we take very seriously.
As we plan and communicate through these new chapters in healthcare history, we have experience to draw on to help ensure smooth transitions. We also know from experience that, sooner than we can imagine, the years 2012 and 2013 will have passed into history as well.
